Our History
With an idea to bring back that old fashioned barbershop experience for men of all ages!
In May of 1999, Don and Alison Lovell opened their first Barber Shop on the corner of 162 and NE 18th St. in East Vancouver. With an idea based on bringing back that old fashioned barber shop experience and a hope that men of all ages would enjoy a haircut by Barbers focused on cutting only men’s hair, The Barbers were in business.
Today, with ten Clark County Locations, seventeen Portland area locations, three Spokane locations, one Corvallis location, one Eugene location, over 300 Barbers and cutting the hair of over 50,000 customers a month, the company has proven that men do enjoy the unique experience of a traditional barbershop.
Before opening The Barbers, Don and Alison had extensive backgrounds in the beauty industry. Alison worked as a stylist and colorist in one of the most exclusive salons in downtown Portland, Magnum Opus. Les Madden, owner of Magnum Opus, is one of Portland’s most renowned barber trained haircutters. Alison apprenticed under Madden and learned the nuances of barbering and cutting men’s hair as well as becoming one of the top colorists in the Portland area.
Don worked as a salon consultant for Redken, Joico, and Goldwell hair products before becoming the area supervisor for Regis hair salons, the world’s largest hair salon ownership company. The Regis Corporation owns salon concepts all over the world.
Upon settling in Vancouver, the Lovell’s looked at the market and recognized that there was a void of places where men could go and feel comfortable in an environment that was geared towards them. Their concept emerged while brainstorming what a new, invigorated Barbershop of today should look like.
