In May of 1999, Don and Alison Lovell opened their first Barber Shop on the corner of 162 and NE 18th St. in East Vancouver. With an idea based on bringing back that old fashioned barber shop experience and a hope that men of all ages would enjoy a haircut by Barbers focused on cutting only men’s hair, The Barbers were in business.
Today, with ten Clark County Locations, seventeen Portland area locations, three Spokane locations, one Corvallis location, over 300 Barbers and cutting the hair of over 50,000 customers a month, the company has proven that men do enjoy the unique experience of a traditional barbershop.
Before opening The Barbers, Don and Alison had extensive background in the beauty industry. Alison worked as a stylist and colorist in one of the most exclusive salons in downtown Portland, Magnum Opus. Les Madden, owner of Magnum Opus, is one of Portland’s most renowned barber trained haircutters. Alison apprenticed under Madden and learned the nuances of barbering and cutting men’s hair as well as becoming one of the top colorists in the Portland area.
Don worked as a salon consultant for Redken, Joico, and Goldwell hair products before becoming the area supervisor for Regis hair salons, the world’s largest hair salon ownership company. The Regis corporation owns salon concepts and others all over the world.
Upon settling in Vancouver, the Lovell’s looked at the market and recognized that there was a void of places where men could go and feel comfortable in an environment that was geared towards them. Their Barbers concept emerged while brainstorming what a new, invigorated Barbershop of today should look like.
If you walk into any Barbers location, you instantly recognize that all the comforts of the old fashioned barbershop have been preserved. Comfortable, old style barber chairs, a relaxing shoulder massage after the haircut, hot lather neck shaves and your favorite magazine and newspaper all keep the traditional barber shop feel alive.
Flat screen TV’s, free popcorn, free soda’s for every client and their decorated sports theme, bring a progressive twist to each location.
Since their opening in the Spring of 1999, The Barbers has become one of Oregon/Washington’s premier Barbershop/Salon companies. In 2004, Barry and Kim Spiegelberg became The Barbers first franchise organization, opening locations throughout the Beaverton, Tualatin and Clackamas areas. The Spiegelbergs are equally committed to to the company’s mission of providing men in the marketplace with the absolute best in men’s grooming and haricutting services. The Barbers have been fortunate to continue to add new Franchisee members as John and Connie Oljar have joined the company in the Metro area along with Dan Dickau in the Spokane area.
The company takes pride in their community involvement and strives to support the many local sports and educational programs throughout the communities they do business in. In 2008, 2009, 2014, 2016 and 2017 The Barbers was named the best Barbershop in town by The Columbian newspaper in their annual “Best Of” publication. The Barbers has also been named a “Top Workplace” by The Oregonian over three times.
